[comp.databases] Third-party tools for Sybase

hartzell@boulder.colorado.edu (George Hartzell) (07/27/90)

We are interested in purchasing the Sybase server and C language
bindings (Open Client) for use in several programming projects. We
would like the system to also be available to non-programmer types but
were not satsified by Sybase's front ends (awb, dwb). Does anyone
know of any third-party packages that work with Sybase, but are
friendlier and/or more flexible (e.g. use termcap or a site modifiable
terminal database), and whether they allow the user to take advantage
of the Sybase server's strong points (triggers, stored proceedures,
etc...).

g.

Unify Corp., 3870 Rosin Court, Sacramento, CA 95834, is a developer of
application development technology and tools. We have a toolset that consists
of a visual, WYSIWYG application screen generator combined with a powerful,
event-driven 4GL, which is called Accell/SQL. Accell/SQL runs on Unify's OLTP
RDBMS, Unify 2000, as well as Oracle V5.x & V6.x; Informix/SQL, Sybase and SCO
Integra.

In addition, remote database access is available to Accell/SQL applications
via Unify's Accell/NET product, via SQL*NET for Oracle and Sybase's
client/server architecture.

Confidential to any flamers: this is not pandering our products; I am
responding to a specific request, so send them to /dev/null.

I've just received some literature about a company called SQL Solutions, Inc.
Their product fact sheet states:

"SQL Solutions currently offers a compendium of eight SQL productivity tools
for each of the four major application lifecycle phases: design and
analysis,
development and implementation, debugging and performance tuning, and
   operational control."

It looks like most of the tools were designed for use with Sybase, but support
for other RDMSs is in progress.

The toolset includes SA Companion, which is "the first fully-integrated
operational control environment to aid SYBASE system adminstrators in managing
complex SQL Server networks".

Also avalable is SQL Advantage, a multi-RDMS programmer productivity
environment
for writing and debugging SQL code.

SQL Solutions, Inc. was established in 1986, and in 1990, it merged with
Sybase.
Their address is phone
     8 New England (800)933-0044
     Executive Park (617)270-4150
     Burlington, MA 01803

I've never seen the product, so obviously this is not an endorsement. Just
passing on some info...
