[comp.databases] Good book/references on OODBMS?

mark@intek01.UUCP (Mark McWiggins) (07/22/90)

My company is moving into some areas that seem a little kinky
for relational databases. Can anyone recommend books/articles on
Object-Oriented databases? I think I have the basic idea, but I
need to look into the details.

Thanks in advance. Please reply by e-mail and I'll post a summary
if there's interest.

One of the best books on o-o abstract concepts -- which are much more
important than their DBMS "implementation" -- is

B.Meyer. Object-oriented software construction. Prentice-Hall, 1988.

{Note: This is _not_ a book about Eiffel.}

Hope this helps.

I have to pick a small nit here: This book is -very much- about the
Eiffel language.

No, its not -just- a book on Eiffel. It is also a solid introduction
to the concepts, issues, and techniques of object-oriented design. But,
I just think that for any book with chapters such as:

        5) Basic Elements of Eiffel programming
        8) More aspects of Eiffel
        15) Implementation: the Eiffel programming environment

and Appendixes like:

        A) Extracts from the Eiffel library
        B) Eiffel: a quick overview
        C) Eiffel grammar
        D) Reserved words and special symbols
        E) Input, output and strings

it's more than a little misleading to say that "This is _not_ a book
about Eiffel."

Don't get me wrong -- I haven't anything against this (I'm waiting
patiently :-) for the DOS implementation of Eiffel to sink my teeth
into myself). I just think a little clarification is required here.
