Hi y'all, I'm teaching an course on the design and implementation of business information systems this fall, and have been provided with Borland's Paradox RDBMS as the vehicle for student implementation projects. Borland will not allow us to photocopy their instructional materials or manuals, so we would like your recommendations on third party books that won't cost "too much", but will provide a reasonable tutorial and a good, thoroughly indexed reference section. Please indicate title, author, publisher, year, price, number of pages, ratio of tutorial to reference, and other useful comments. Thanks in advance! -Chris Christopher E. I would recommend "Hands-On Paradox3" by Steven and Douglas Cobb, Ken Richardson, Jeff Yocum. Published by The Cobb Group Inc. Copyright 1989. It is a self-paced training workbook including an exercise diskette. It is 414 pages and references the book "The Paradox 3.0 Handbook" as well as the regular Paradox manuals. You can buy "The Paradox 3.0 Handbook" and "Hands- On Paradox3" as a set for @ $75.95, or just the "The Paradox 3.0 Handbook" for @ $32.95. "The Paradox 3.0 Handbook" is by Douglas Cobb, Jeff Yocum, and Brian Smith, publisher Bantam Books. Call The Cobb Group at 1-800-223-8720 for more information. Also, if you are teaching PAL (Paradox Application Language) programming you will want to get "Paradox Programmer's Guide, PAL by Example" by Alan Zeinreich and James N. Kocis, published by Scott Foresman and Company. Copyright 1990. It is an excellent technical reference for just $29.95. <Insert Standard Disclaimer Here> -- Bill Yock, Weeg Computing Center, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa 52242 byock@umaxc.weeg.uiowa.edu

I agree that this book is very comprehensive. However, it should be pointed out that this book is poorly indexed, and the table of contents is skimpy. The index is long and looks good (one reason that I bought it), but it simply leaves out too much. For example, the entry for the ADD command fails to mention the chapter on Multitable Operations (chapt 9), which devotes its first 20 pages or so to this command. I feel that I had to sit down and read this book like a novel from cover to cover to get all of its meat. I've taken to sticking post-it notes in it to find useful places and to writing my own entries into the index. ########################################################################## # # # George Entenman (ge@mcnc.org) # # The Microelectronics Center of North Carolina # # P.O. Bruce III and E. David Kramer. It is published by Que Corporation who have a plethora of computer/ software books from which to choose. This is a good beginning text and also contains a chapter on the Personal Programmer and a brief overview of the PAL language. You could call 800-428-5331 to get their catalog. Their address is P.O. Box 90, Carmel, IN 46032. The price was $22.95 last I checked.
