I'm involved in a student project at University of Oslo, where we might have to use a distributed database solution. I would like to get in touch with people who have some sort of experience using Ingres or sybase distributed. Are there anyone who have tried to use database systems from different vendors together in one logical distributed database? You may very well answer with mail, if this subject don't fit to be discussed in this newsgroup. Thanks in advance. Regards, -- Tore Solvar email: tore@ifi.uio.no

Ingres does support distributed database applications across a variety of platforms. (At least the commercial version does.) If I understand what you're saying, you need to use gatewaays into RDBMS systems from more than one verder, in which case you need to look at their "gateway" products too. CMU has a little experience in using the distributed product at present. My systems (telecommunications/accounting) use STAR to link equipment and call detail data bases for accounting purposes. The new system we will start writing soon will make far more extensive use of distributed data bases and processing techniques. There are probably others out there who can contribute to this discussion. For the sake of sanity, I would like to propose that comments come from folks who've actually done something with a DDB. It might help keep the signal to noise ratio reasonable.
