I am interested in the implementation of user-defined indexes in database systems. I have heard of the idea discussed in a paper associated with Ingres (or was it Postgres?) but I don't know its status or other references to this topic. Does anyone have information on this? My specific application deals with three-dimensional spatial data and I would like to create a spatial index on this data. I don't want to build my own database from scratch but would like to be able to define my own index structure to be used by an existing database management system. Any ideas?
