[comp.databases] Useful Clipper Material...

derykm@oz.plymouth.edu (Dez) (10/31/90)

Hi.

I am looking for good material, such as Books and magazines, that will
help me in my programming with Clipper. I am also looking for a good
beginning/intermediate book on programming in Clipper and/or Dbase III+.
I have looked at Arthur Fuller's book, but it tends to be a little
advanced, and doesn't give good examples on getting started, nor finding
the answer to a problem qukckly. All help is greatly appreciated.

thanks.

deryk

Can't help you with books, but you might want to try the following magazines:

Reference(Clipper), published monthly by Pinacle Publishing, Inc., 28621
Pacific Highway South, Federal Way, WA 98003. A one year (twelve issue)
subscription costs $99 (U.S.) or $119 (anywhere else). Phone: 800/231-1293
(U.S.), 206/941-2300 (elsewhere). I've found this magazine to have two or
three usable suggestions per issue, ranging from basic to advanced.

DBMS, published monthly (except June, which has two issues) by M & T
Publishing, Inc., 501 Galveston Drive, Redwood City, CA 94063. Subscriptions
cost $24.95 per year (U.S.), $35 (Canada and Mexico), or $60 (anywhere else).
Subscription info: 800/456-1859 (U.S. and Canada), 303/447-9330 (elsewhere).
This is a better general magazine, less technical than Reference(Clipper),
with a focus on all dBase-language products and some coverage of other
languages.

Data Based Advisor, published monthly by Data Based Solutions, Inc., 4010
Morena Blvd., Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92117, phone 619/483-6400.
Subscriptions cost $35 per year (U.S.), $45 (Canada and Mexico), and $65
(elsewhere). This is the most general magazine of all, covering dBase-
language stuff, PC-based SQL stuff, Paradox, and so on, none of them in
as much depth as either Reference(Clipper) or DBMS.

Hope this helps. I have no connection with any of these magazines, of course,
other than as a subscriber.

If you can find books by Rick Spense or Steve Straley (although *not* Straley's
Programming In Clipper (c) 1987 (because it was written when Summer '87 just
came out, and 5.0 was unheard of.) you'll be in good shape. If you're a dBASE
programmer then any of the magazines mentioned in a previous post would help;
my recommendation is Reference(Clipper) - additionally, Straley publishes a
newsletter called From the Desk of Steve Straley. It's a biweekly, with code
and code fragments in Clipper (now in Clipper 5.0) every issue. Address is:

       Four Seasons Publishing Co., Inc.
       P.O. Box 20025
       New York, NY 10017-0001

       Subscription costs are $80/year.

I've found that the best reference materials (assuming that you're a dBASE
programmer) are just Nantucket's sample code and the manuals. What kind of
stuff are you looking to program? If you have any particular questions, post
or e-mail me (b39y@vax5.cit.cornell.edu), OK?

Rick Spence's "Programming in Clipper" is in a league by itself. There
is simply no other book that compares to it (IMHO) in discussing the
subtleties, tricks and problems of serious Clipper development. (It
is published by Micro Trend (i.e., Data Based Advisor) in San Diego.)
BTW, I don't know when an edition discussing 5.0 (aka "Summer '90")
will be available. However, Rick has had an ongoing series in
DBMS Mag on new features in 5.0, and obtaining these would be a good
start toward the brave, new world of 5.0.

Que's "Using Clipper" by Wiley is good for serving as a bootleg
manual for Clipper. It provides a comprehensive command listing,
as well as introductory material on linking, overlays, etc.

How foolish of me! The series is called "Hard Core Clipper" and
has actually appeared in _Data Based Advisor_ magazine. Mea culpa!
