[comp.databases] 4D, Omnis, Double Helix limits

beveland@IASTATE.EDU (Eveland Bruce R) (12/11/90)

Question 1:

Let say I'm running on an Mac Ethernet and buy a FX or 3COM server with as
much memory as possible. What are the real world limits of each of these
databases as far a number of concurent users and database size before
the thing dies.

Question 2:

Has anyone used any of these databases to connect up to larger databases
in Unix land ie (SYBASE, INGRES etc). To either upload or access data.

If there is enough interest I'll be glad to post a summary of the
reponses. Thanx for your help and or advice.

The following limits are from Apple's Tech Note# 216, LImits for AppleShare
1.1 & 2.0 Servers:
The following chart lists some current AppleShare limits which are based upon
the chosen server platform and memory configuration. The limits which otherwise
might be present on a workstation are still in effect and are not affected by
the workstation being logged into an AppleShare server. These limits will
change in the future.

Server machine is: Server machine is:
Macintosh Plus, SE, Macintosh II with
Description of Limit or II with one Mb more than one Mb
Number of Users 25 50
Number of Locked Ranges 1000 2000
Number of Open Files 80 160
Number of Volumes 16 16

I have no numbers for 3Com servers. Novell Netware servers should be adjustable
depending on the system & available memory.

I would be delighted to hear other users experiences, trial & tribulations,
as we are about to embark on such an expedition ourselves.
