Subject: Sun3 & Sun4 client nodes in Ingres 6.3 through INGRES/NET

We have been trying to set up a system in which a common database
can be accessed from several different client nodes some of which are
Sun3's and some Sun4's with the actually database itself residing on
a Sun4. We have built the complete Sun4 server using 'iibuild' and
have been able to successfully get multiple Sun4's to access the
common database server. The client nodes were installed by running
'iibuild -c <node_name>' from the server machine and the utility creates
two files called 'iirungcc.opt' and 'symbol.tbl' in the directory
$II_SYSTEM/ingres/admin/<node_name> which contain setup parameters
for the client.

To date we have only been able to get one Sun3 at a time up and running.
We use the same procedure as above to build a Sun3 client, but two
of the Ingres variables (II_GCNxx_LCL_VNODE and II_GCNxx_PORT) do not
appear in the 'symbol.tbl' file like they do when we build a Sun4
client. We seem to be able to build several Sun3 clients but when
we try to start up iigcn and iigcc on several clients, only the
last one that we started can access the server. It appears that
they are both trying to access the same port or some such. The
the values of II_GCNxx_LCL_VNODE and II_GCNxx_PORT reflect a unique
port number and node name when we build a Sun4 client.

We have found that a symbol.tbl file exists in
$II_SYSTEM/ingres/files. And everytime we build a new Sun3 client the
two aforementioned variables change in this symbol table to reflect the
newest client added. This does not happen when we build a new
Sun4 client.

If anyone has seen a similar problem or has just simply setup a
similar network enviroment, I would appreciate any insight you might
be willing to share.

    Thanks in advance,
