I am in the process of developing a Departmental database for maintaining student, staff, administation and other information. I have been looking at a suitable database product to develop this system on. We are currently using Sun Sparc stations, MACs and PCs in the department. My intention is to place the database on a Sun running SunOS, but to be able to access it from either the Suns or any other machine on the network (ethernet). The PCs are running DOS and NFS and the MACs are running finder. We are also running X windows (rel 4) and would like to have a X interface for making databse updates and queries. Access restrictions and security will be important since most info in the databse will be of a confidential nature. I have been told that db_Vista and db_Query range of products from Raima corporation will be a good platform for the job. However, since these products only work under SunView, I will need to port the interface stuff on to X. Has anybody out there used these products or done anything similar.
