I'm involved in developing a prototype focusing on heterogenous database access (accessing multiple and unsimilar DBMSs maintaining transparency to the client application). We have targeted to implement this using a RDBMS, with the first remote database being to ORACLE. Unfortunately, to my knowledge ORACLE doesn't provide such a capability - although they support some gateways using SQL*CONNECT. Only SYBASE's OPEN SERVER product suggests a generalized access to various DBMSs as well as file systems. Has anyone had experience developing such a server application using OPEN SERVER? Specifically, has anyone written a conversion application to access ORACLE SQL and extensions from another DBMS? Information on level of complexity, key issues to consider, and problems discovered would be extremely helpful. Does any other RDBMS vendor support true heterogenous DB access? Any suggestions or recommendations are greatly appreciated! I will post a summary if interest exists. Sincerely, Glenn Oliveira
