[comp.databases] Speeding up Oracle apps

morris@ucunix.san.uc.edu (Ted Morris) (02/06/91)

We have put together a prototype application which uses Oracle for
Macintosh (HyperCard interface) to exchange data with Oracle for VMS
running on a MicroVax II. The Macs are all MacII-series machines. We'd
like to speed up the delivery of information from the MicroVax II Oracle
to the Macintosh interface when doing querying, etc., since users are
finding the transaction times to be -really- unacceptable. Example:
query which finds 7 records from 4000 record database takes -20 seconds-
to execute and display results.

We're working on "tuning" the database where we can and as we understand
the process of "tuning" but if anyone out there has experience with the
problems and solutions regarding speeding this up, we'd welcome your
comments.

Environment: Eleven MacII-series wkstns running TSSnet (DECnet for Mac),
EtherTalk Phase 1, over a coax 10Mb EtherNet (EtherTalk and DECnet) LAN,
with a MicroVAX II running VMS.
