[comp.databases] Suggestions for Sybase front-end

larry@st-andy.uucp (Larry Martell) (02/22/91)

We just got Sybase and I'm a bit surprised at what it doesn't have.

I've worked extensively with Unify in the past and was never very fond
of it, but now I find myself missing 2 features it had. These are the
schema entry front-end and the automatic maintenance of referential integrity.

For those who haven't used Unify, for schema entry it put you into a full
screen front-end where you entered the table name, the field names, their
data type, specified the key field(s), and the relation (if any) fields
have with fields from other tables (foreign keys). Having specified these
relations, Unify would automatically check values during adds, deletes, and
updates, disallowing the operation if it would violate the referential
integrity.

It seems a bit clunky to me to have to define the entire schema using SQL,
and then go and write an insert, delete, and update trigger for each
relation you wish to maintain.

Does anyone know of a front-end for Sybase that would provide such features.
Things I've looked at (e.g. Jam, Accell) seem to concentrate on the users
interface not the programmers interface.

Thanks!
