[net.records] Some -- Possibly Offensive -- Christmas Discs

eli (11/23/82)

I was just sent a copy of the new single by Fear. The B-side
is a "clean" version of the A-side, and is entitled '(Beep) Christmas'.
In all of its 44-seconds I think it manages to be pretty offensive,
while at the same time venting an enormous amount of anger towards
a holiday that, in this country, seems to have become more of an
excuse to go shopping, than a religious celebration.

For a real bite of sardonic Christmas lyrics, I still haven't
found anything to top The Kinks "Father Christmas." Unfortunately I
think this one's gone out of print (and may only have been available
as an import to begin with).

Lastly, while I'm on Christmas records: Can anyone believe that
the Phil Spector Christmas Album has been reissued in Electronically
Separated Stereo!? And they had the intelligence to use the cover
from the first reissue, depicting Phil Spector as Santa Claus, with
a "Back to Mono" button on his suit. No wonder the record industry
is in a slump!

One of my favorite put-downs of Christmas commercialism comes from a
group that likes to put down modern ritualistic religion in general, but with
Christian undertones, and that is Jethro Tull. (Remember songs like
"Wind Up" ["He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays"] and "My God"
["Well if Jesus saves, then he better save himself"]?) . The song I am
referring to is "Christmas Song" ["Christmas spirit, is not what you drink"].

I rather like Tom Lehrer's Xmas carol. It cuts up the commercialism
but good. (wellly?) And that was 20 years ago!
If people are interested I could probably post the lyrics.

Another Christmas cut-up was done ages ago by Simon and
Garfunkle. It superimposed Silent Night and the 12 Oclock
news, juxtaposing violence with the hollow peace sentiments
of Christmas.

Perhaps one of the funniest (or possibly offensive) Christmas
Albums I ever heard was "Have a Jewish Christmas". I had about
12 skits on what it was like to be Jewish at Christmastime. If
anyone's interested in it, mail me, and I'll dig up the album to
tell you more.
