[comp.databases] Postgres on RS/6000

cpl@bhpmrl.oz.au (Paul Lloyd) (03/28/91)

I'm after some advice, experience, or opinions:

We are considering getting an IBM RS/6000 as a database server. I have
seen a number of disturbing comments in the computer press, and in
other newsgroups about the "proprietary" nature of IBM's AIX (is it v3
that is the latest?), its difficulties with public domain UNIX s/ware,
and its performance degradation with multiple users. Are these
comments justified for database servers?

I am also interested in getting Postgres to try out object-oriented
extensions to the relational data model. I see that Postgres (at least
the latest version, v2r1) is really only "guaranteed" operational on
Sun SPARC systems, DEC ULTRIX systems, and Sequent Symmetry systems.

Has anyone tried to port Postgres to AIX, and if so what problems have
you encountered? Can you get it to work fully? Did any of the reported
problems arise, and if so, how did you overcome them? If there is
sufficient interest I will post a summary of replies to the net.

Thanks in advance,
