                      CALL FOR PAPERS AND REFEREES

                        THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL
HAWAII INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEMS SCIENCES
                   KAUAI, HAWAII - JANUARY 7-10, 1992

MINITRACK ON MULTI DATA/KNOWLEDGE BASE SYSTEMS

As the number of computer applications in an organization increases, so
does the need to interoperate many of those application and to integrate
them into an overall information system. This need is driven by the
emergence of strategic applications that require access to and
integration of information among diverse information systems, as well as
the economic savings that could be realized from such integration.

To achieve these goals, two major issues have to be addressed: 1)
Semantic heterogeneity: Since the various information systems have been
designed independently, structural conflicts are likely to be present.
These include naming, different representation, modeling conflicts as
will as inconsistencies in the information contents (data, rules, etc),
and 2) Information management system heterogeneity: Systems managing the
information may use different data models and/or languages (e.g.,
relational model/SQL vs. hierarchical model/DLI), are based on different
paradigms (e.g., rule based vs. frame based), and so on.

This minitrack deals with theoretical and practical issues of Multi
Data/Knowledge Base Systems. Topics include, but are not limited to,
the following:

- Multi Data/Knowledge Base System Architectures
- Autonomy in Multi Data/Knowledge Base Environments
- Transaction Processing in Heterogeneous Data/Knowledge Base
  Environments
- Semantic Heterogeneity Detection and Resolution
- Schema/Paradigm Transformation and Query Language Translation

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING PAPERS

Manuscripts should be 22-25 typewritten, double-spaced pages. Please do
not send submissions that are significantly shorter or longer than this.
Papers must not have been previously presented or published, nor
currently submitted for journal publication. Each manuscript will be
subjected to a rigorous refereeing process. Manuscripts should have a
title page that includes the title of the paper, full name(s) of
author(s), affiliation(s), complete postal and electronic mail
address(es), telephone number(s), and a 300-word abstract of paper.

DEADLINES

- Six copies of the manuscript are due by June 5, 1991.
- Notification of accepted papers by August 30, 1991.
- Accepted manuscripts, camera-ready, are due by October 1, 1991.
