[comp.databases] DB in distributed environment evaluation questions wanted.

kenr@cruise.cc.rochester.edu (Kenneth C. Rich) (05/22/91)

Does anyone know anything about PeopleSoft, their Human Resource Management
System (HRMS)? Does anyone know anything about the platforms it runs on:
OS/2 LAN with Gupta SQLBase, or HP3000 with Allbase (soon (?!?) to be in beta)?
Or their real-soon-now platform HP9000 with ORACLE?

Does anyone have or know of a good payroll-personnel (HRMS) package for
Sun or other similar system?

MORE IMPORTANTLY: what are good QUESTIONS for EVALUATORS to ask a VENDOR
about a product claiming pie in the HRMS sky plus it runs client-server
over LAN tokenring tcpip on all the hardware worth running on...

Someone here asked our group, Unix OS programmers, to come up with
questions to ask these people. The group wanting to evaluate the
product are only familiar with mainframe batch-environment
applications. Our group is only familiar with the distributed (mainly
Sun) environment in a student and researcher user population, and not an
MIS, data-processing environment.

Our higher-ups are asking, will an HRMS even work in a distributed
environment (!) just to give you a taste for the difficulties.

Please, jot a question off the top of your head and email.
Impact of xyz on network|cpu|etc; Why did you choose xyz lousy underlying
product instead of abc; etc. If I didn't give enough info for the
question you'd like to ask, I'll provide more by email.
Responses by Friday May 24 will be especially appreciated (and influential!).
If interested in the results, ask. If lots of interest, I will post to
comp.databases. THANKS (danke merci gracias arigatou)
