My organization is considering database options for a new development effort for a critical application (electric utility distribution automation). In some ways OODBMSes seem appealing (persistence of C++ objects, etc.), but we wonder: (1) Are the products really mature enough to bet the bank on? This system will have to run for months on end. (2) Is there really that much of an advantage to the OODBMS approach over standard relational augmented with custom programming (like storing a pointer in your relational table to some graphics data in heap storage on disk, etc.)? (3) Have any praise/horror stories about particular OODBMSes? Thanks in advance; please reply by e-mail and I'll summarize if there's interest. -- Mark McWiggins ...uw-beaver!amc-gw!hermesa!mark (until it's in the maps) mark@hermesa.uucp (Real Soon Now) Box 40357, Bellevue WA 98004 / +1 206 455 2786 (24 hrs.)
