[comp.databases] Book recommendation / Summary of responses

kingt@ux.acs.umn.edu (Kingt) (05/29/91)

Here is a summary of the responses to my request for SQL, Oracle and Ingres
book recommendations.

SQL
---

The SQL recommendations strongly favored

_The Practical SQL Handbook: Using Structured Query Language_
by Sandra L. Emerson, Marcy Darnovsky, and Judith S. Bowman
   (ISBN: 0-201-51728-8)

One person recommended

  _SQL and its Applications_
by Raymond Lorie and Jean-Jacques Daudenard

Paul Lloyd pointed out that there are some CBT and video-based SQL courses which
might be worth checking out. He also mentioned that DBMS magazine is running a
"quite lucid" tutorial series on SQL.

Oracle
------
_ORACLE: A Database Developer's Guide_ by Ulka Rodgers
_ORACLE: The Complete Reference_ by George Koch
_ORACLE: Building High Performance Online Systems_ by W. H. Immon
  _Mastering ORACLE_

The Rodgers book was recommended by two different people. All the others were
mentioned once each. No author was given for _Mastering ORACLE_.

According to Bess Protacio, the Rodgers and Koch books are highly recommended by
the New York Oracle Users Group.

Ingres
------
I received two Ingres book recommendations:

"Chris Date's book on Ingres," and

_Ingres, Tools for Building an Information Architecture_
by Carl Malamud and Van Nostrand Reinhold

For what it's worth, I purchased the Lorie and Daudenard SQL book and find it
to be quite good. They provide a basic introduction to database design
(including an overview of 1NF, 2NF, ...) and generic SQL with exercises.

As soon as I can find it (and can afford it), I intend to buy the Emerson,
Darnovsky and Bowman book as well.

I'd like to thank all those who took the time to answer my query. I am
graduating from the University of Minnesota this week, and then I start my job
with the "Relational Technologies" group of a small consulting firm (working
primarily with Ingres, Oracle and SQL). Hopefully those book are going to help
me bone up on my knowledge; it's been a long time since I took my last Database
Systems course :-) In any case, I am looking forward to it.

The responses came from:

lstowell@pyrnova.pyramid.com (Lon Stowell)
bess@pinet.aip.org (Bess Protacio)
mmc@sybase.com (Matthew McClure)
tiger@sybase.com (tiger whittemore)
cpl@resmel.bhp.com.au (Paul Lloyd)
and
another person whose message I accidentally deleted before I got a chance to read
it.

Thanks!
