Call For Papers
IEEE Expert Special Track on Artificial Intelligence
in Text-Based Information Systems
This special track solicits articles which report on the application
of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to the design and develop-
ment of text-based information systems. Text-based information sys-
tems are characterized either by databases that contain predominantly
natural language text (for example, office systems, bibliographic ap-
plications), or by the central role that text plays in the retrieval
of other types of information (for example, multimedia applications
storing images, video, graphics, etc.). Effective retrieval in a
text-based system is difficult because of the unstructured nature of
much of the information stored, and because the semantics of text is
not easy to define. Techniques from AI could potentially improve many
aspects of such systems, from the acquisition, analysis, representa-
tion and organization of information to the retrieval, evaluation, and
refinement of information in response to users' queries.
Articles should clearly explain the approaches and techniques used,
and what impact these techniques have on the information system's per-
formance. Articles that include reports of performance evaluation
will be preferred. We are particularly interested in descriptions of
systems that are being used in industry, or that use databases
developed from
real applications.
Audience
IEEE Expert's charter is to try to transfer to the user community
ideas and tools that come out of research and development; clear, not
overly formal, writing is essential. Its readers are users, develop-
ers, managers, researchers, and purchasers who are interested in data-
bases, expert systems, and artificial intelligence, with particular
emphasis on applications. They want to learn about the tools, tech-
niques, concepts, aids, and systems that have potential for real-world
applications.
Special Tracks
A special track is a collection of papers united by a theme; it is
just like a special issue except that the articles appear over several
issues.
Submissions
All manuscripts submitted for publication should be original. Arti-
cles published in other journals will not be considered. Submissions
should run 8 to 10 journal pages. For full submission guidelines,
please contact one of the guest editors.
Four copies of the full manuscript should be submitted to either of
the guest editors listed below before October 25, 1991. Manuscripts
will be reviewed by at least three reviewers.
