[comp.databases] Info wanted on MOD204

krol@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu (Ed Krol) (06/05/91)

A department at the U of I has found an application to meet their
needs but it runs on an IBM system under an inverted file system (I
think) called MOD204 from CCA Inc. It is quite pricy and the department
is worried that 1. everyone giving them advice about this product
has some vested interest - like making a sale. and 2. you don't pick
up datamation and see articles like MOD204 is gods gift to database
manipulations.

They are looking for opinions as to whether MOD204 is a reasonable
thing to run under. If in the future there is a database system which
would be better to use is there a way to extract data from MOD204
in a generic way to allow its loading into some other package.

Thanks

We run Model 204 DBMS software here at YSU, and have since some time
in 1985. It's a product of Computer Corporation of America, 4 Cambridge
Center, Cambridge, Ma 02142.

The physical implementation of the DBMS is inverted file. The 4GL
language, User Language, is set-oriented. It is not a relational
DBMS, although you can use it with fully normalized data in separate
files.

Model204 runs under VM, MVS, and DOS/VSE. There's native TP access
from VTAM, as well as via CICS, TSO, TCAM, BTAM, and from CMS. There's
support for COBOL, PL/I, 370 Assembler, Fortran, and Ada, although
the preferred environment is using User Language through one of the
TP interfaces.

There's a lot more that can be said about Model 204, both good and
bad. Best place on the net to get information is from the Model 204
mailing list (m204-l@akronvm.uakron.edu). This is a VM LISTSERV-hosted
list.

To sub, send mail to listserv@akronvm.uakron.edu. In the body put:

sub m204-l Joe Schmuck (or whatever your real name is).

To post an article, send it to m204-l@akronvm.uakron.edu.

To unsub, send mail to listserv@akronvm.uakron.edu. In the body put:

unsub m204-l

That's it. The mailing list is low-traffic (right now, anyway). Also,
for bitnet sites, akronvm.uakron.edu = akronvm.bitnet.

Sir, the computer doesn't make mistakes. Your bill is still $21,736.45.
