Here's the situation. We need to set up a database to be used by non-computer types. They'll be doing data entry via X and dumb terminals, all hooked to a Sun SparcStation. Data entry screens should be customizable to the point of idiocy. (I suspect I'm going to have to have a help entry for each field, etc.) Likewise, maintenance of the database (adding new fields, deleting bad entries) should be customizable to an amazingly simple level. (I don't want to have to get up at 8am and add a field or delete a bad entry. :-) And finally, queries/report generation should have a lot of flexibility. Especially in terms of formatting data into flat ascii files (to be read by other packages). All this needs to run under a UNIX environment, and rather soon. I don't want to ignore my *real* work (parallel ray tracer, amiga hacking, etc) much longer. I've heard good things (so far) about Informix and Dbase IV (but DBIV only runs under SunView and dumb terminals). Email replies, I'll summarize. thx -- J.
