[comp.databases] Sybase on VMS SIG??

dshapiro@apple.com (David Shapiro ) (06/19/91)

I was hoping to start a net.discussion, perhaps a mailing list of dbo's,
programmers, system administrators, or anyone dealing with Sybase
under VMS. I would be particularly interested in hearing from /
sharing my experience on subjects like:

o Performance and tuning - best SYSGEN params for a given Sybase
setup.
o Disk hardware and Sybase - allocation strategy for optimal
performance.
o Device management under Sybase
o Backup strategies - your automation gems
o Basic dbo stuff: queries & stored proc's you've come up with to help
you administer production or development databases.
o Transact SQL - transactions & locking, speed/speed/speed, security

For anyone at the Sybase User's Conference, the attendance at the
performance seminar and the dbcc seminar indicate a real need to
get more information about the Server out to the Sybase community.

To get things going, I'm in the throws of capacity planning for a new
Vax which will only run a SQL Server. I'd like anyone's input on a
similar configuration and what to look out for from a VMS point of
view. Also, has anyone used the ese20 (125 MB ram drive) from DEC
- or other similar products - and what table/indexes/temdb are the
best candidates for storage on this thing.

I will summarize to the net and to any interested people who email
me. Thanks,

Dave Shapiro
