A neighbouring site is struggling to install news 2.11 on their Eunice system. All programs have compiled. The problem arises when a batch of news is received. The batch is placed in the directory /usr/spool/news/.rnews, and is not unbatched. SPOOLNEWS is not defined, so it should unbatch immediately. When rnews -U is run (rnews -U -S was tried also), it seems to hang, and never exits. The patchlevel of the news is 0, I believe (none of the 5 patches have yet been applied), but I do not see in any of the patches a fix for the above problem. Has anyone else encountered this problem, or can give us any clue as to what to look for? Any help would be much appreciated. This site has never had news running before, so it's all new to them. regards, -- Bruce Townsend (bnr-vpa!bruce) Phone: (613) 726-3008 Bell-Northern Research Usenet: {utzoo, utcs}!bnr-vpa!bruce P.O. News batches only go in the .rnews subdirectory (it's actually +rnews on Eunice because of filename conversion idiocy in Eunice) if news thinks expire is running. The idea is to keep expire and inews/rnews from trying to modify "active" and "history" at the same time. See if the file "active.lock" exists in /usr/lib/news. If it does, remove it, and then try rnews -U. If this still doesn't work, send me your localize.sh (address below). >The patchlevel of the news is 0, I believe (none of the 5 patches >have yet been applied), but I do not see in any of the patches a >fix for the above problem. Eunice news users should immediately install patch #1 or an rmgroup control message may screw up your active file. -- - Joe Buck {hplabs,ihnp4,sun,ames}!oliveb!epimass!jbuck seismo!epiwrl!epimass!jbuck {pesnta, tymix, apple}!epimass!jbuck Entropic Processing, Inc., Cupertino, California
