There seems to be some confusion regarding the participation of the USENIX Association in the UUCP and USENET networks and in projects related to them. The USENIX Board is not interested in controlling either network. USENIX has never spent many thousands of dollars a year on either Stargate or the UUCP Project. The USENIX budget is traditionally published in the ;login: newsletter, which all members receive. The latest issue includes the latest financial figures. There is a line item for Stargate. The Stargate experiment ceased to be funded by USENIX as of the end of February of this year; USENIX currently plays no role in Stargate. That decision was announced in postings at the January USENIX Conference in Washington, D.C., at the USENET BOF there, on comp.org.usenix shortly afterwards, and in the current issue of ;login:. A good place for members to discuss involvement of the Association with these and other network-related projects would be at the open board meeting at the Phoenix USENIX Conference, 8-12 June 1987.
