At the October meeting of the Board of Directors of the USENIX Association, there was a good deal of discussion concerning the UUNET experiment. The general opinion was that the experiment had worked extremely well and that the USENIX Association was happy to have sponsored UUNET initially and would continue to act as a guarantor for the service. A subcommittee of the Board was appointed to set up firm procedures to establish UUNET as an independent entity in the future. The Association's lawyers were requested to ascertain the status of UUNET as a carrier and to report to the Board as to the procedures for getting UUNET classified as a common carrier. Despite a few technical problems in the past few weeks (caused in part by a major power outage in Virginia and a concommitant failure on the part of Tymnet), UUNET is florishing. Peter H.
