Request for Proposals A Dialup Mailroom Facility for the San Francisco USENIX Conference 20-24 June 1988. Attendees of previous USENIX conferences have requested a facility they can use to dial up their home machines and read their electronic mail or otherwise interact with their home facilities. The attendees have also indicated they are willing to pay telephone charges to do this. The USENIX board of directors is seeking proposals from companies willing to provide this service at our next conference. This would be an excellent public relations opportunity for the company providing the service. All costs must be borne by the sponsor, not USENIX. Needed: * 15 terminals: any kind will do. * 15 modems: must work through Hilton PBX; 1200bps acceptable, faster desirable. * Attendants: provider will be responsible for providing an attendant to watch the equipment, collect the Hilton's per-call charge, if desired. Available: Lockable room, fourth floor of the downtown Hilton, the conference hotel. 15 phone lines: to be supplied by the Hilton; $1,500 installation. Two jacks per line: one for telephone handset, one for modem. Dial 0 to get a Hilton operator, who will supply outside operator (so there's no way to charge directly to the calling line). $0.75 to the Hilton per call per line (perhaps negotiable downwards). Desirable: Ideally, the terminal room would be open ten or more hours during each day of the conference. A local computer would also be of use, so attendees could demonstrate programs to each other. A connection from the computer to the exhibit floor ethernet would be nice. It would probably have to be done through the hotel PBX, perhaps with a pair of high-speed modems. Not possible: The terminal room can't be in or adjacent to the exhibit hall. However, the room that is available is in easy walking distance in the same building, and signs will be posted by the USENIX conference staff. Date of this RFP: 15 April, 1988. Respond to John S. Quarterman, jsq@usenix.org, uunet!usenix!jsq, 512-320-9031, or Peter Salus, peter@usenix.org, uunet!usenix!peter, 415-528-8649.
