In several postings, The Gawain Group has announced tutorials to be held at the same time as those of the USENIX Association and in the same venue, San Francisco's Hilton Square. The postings have stated that the USENIX Association had encouraged this. The announcements are inaccurate and misleading. I spoke with Jim Joyce several weeks ago and told him that I saw no way that the Association could interfere with or prevent The Gawain Group from offering tutorials. I would not consider this encouragement. Further, the USENIX Association is limiting the size of several of its San Francisco tutorials because the Hilton has insufficient space for groups of 60 to 150. The Gawain Group, according to the Hilton's manager, had not rented space for a tutorial as of last week, nor (because of our conference) will they be allowed to rent space without the written consent of the Association. As of 12 May such consent has not been sought. If the Hilton had additional space for 120, the Association would be using it. Peter H. Salus Executive Director
