[comp.org.usenix] USENIX Distribution Tape

gors@well.UUCP (Gordon Stewart) (08/02/89)

After conversations with the very helpful people at USENIX, it appears
that an index, bill of materials, table of contents, list of
ingredients, etc. is completely unavailable, due to the intransigence
of the individual who supplied the tape. Ick!

I think that the numerous requests for a list of the contents bears out
my opinion that, at minimum, a brief index list (a la
comp.unix.sources, or the NIC info) must be available.

Apparently the unnamed person's attitude was "It's got hundreds of
programs and it's cheap -- if they don't like it, let 'em send it
back." As if our time and energy isn't worth anything!

I wouldn't mind seeing a posting from some generous soul who bought the
pig in the poke and is eager to tell us all what the pig looks like.
Meanwhile, I'll keep my cash in my pocket!

As long as the Association doesn't mind, I'll post a listing, of
the files. It's kinda large, but if enough people show interest, I'll do
it. At the minimum, I'll make the listing available for anonymous ftp
on polyslo.calpoly.edu (129.65.17.1) for those with Internet access. If
everyone else is willing (and I don't get flamed too much for the amount
of net.bandwidth it will use up), I'll post it later this week.

Thnx for the listing, I picked it up, and while perusing, I saw, (quess
what ? Sigh!!) A Yacc !!!!!! Now, Either My eyesight is failing, or these
filenames look awfully like those of the so-called DECUS Yacc, the most
mishandled piece of licensed/trade-secret (:-) piece of software, the real
Yacc clipped to little pieces. I cannot even begin to imagine the
repercussions of this scale a mistake by USENIX, if I am right. (I may be
wrong, but I kinda doubt it. Deja Vous... I posted a similar note
4-5 years ago, after discovering Yacc on a decus tape. Sigh.)

C'mon folks !!! Would somebody check this real soon, and avoid some
nasty business ??

As the USENIX tape guy, I'll be checking this out.

I would be glad to give you a list of contents of the tape I received
(USENIX 89.1 Plus Five) just as soon as I can get it read. The
unfortunate thing is that the USENIX folks sent a 6250bpi tape
and our tape drive only does 1600! OK, we have some old equipment,
but the order form did say that the tape would be 1600bpi unless
otherwise specified, and we specified 1600bpi on top of that!
Now I'm faced with mailing the tape back to get a new one or
finding another local site to help me copy it to a format we can
use -- talk about wasting time! I have a very busy schedule, etc. etc.

Of course, there's always the telephone...

Dancing on the edge...
