[comp.org.usenix] Who didn't make it?

rsalz@bbn.com (Rich Salz) (12/08/89)

If you were not chosen by the Nominations Committee, and would be willing to
make this fact public, please send me email.

I'm one of those people.

Thanks,

Hmmm, looking over the list of candidates nominated by the nominating
committee, I can't help but notice that there is no academic faculty
listed (although I know nothing about Evi Nemeth's position at U of CO).

I have no gripe with the candidates selected. Those I know are fine
people, and I assume those I don't know are also highly qualified.
However, considering the number of academic members of Usenix,
including organizational members, it would seem to me that at least
1/4 of the candidates should be from academic environments.

Yes, I know that Marshall McKusick and Dan Klein are in quasi-academic
positions, but I believe there is a need for tenure-track-type faculty to be
involved. With Usenix sponsoring more and more research-oriented
workshops, with scholarships and discounts being offered to students,
with the research-oriented journal "Computing Systems", et. al., I
strongly believe there is a legitimate need for more academic
participation on the board. Not dominant, but at least represented!
Heck, if Prisma can have 2 nominees, why not academia? :-)

I made this same complaint after the nominees were announced prior to
the last election. I'll ask the question again: what is it about
teaching at the university level that makes people unqualified for the
Usenix board?

If the nominating committee contacted some of our
academically-oriented members about serving and were turned down, my
apologies. If not, then why the hell not?

FYI, according to ";login:", the nominees are:

Steven C. Johnson, Stardent (nominee for President)
Marshall McKusick, UCB (nominee for President)
Mike O'Dell, Prisma (nominee for VP)
Rob Kolstad, Prisma (nominee for Secretary)
Sharon Murrel, AT&T Bell Labs (nominee for Treasurer)
Peter Collinson, Hillside Systems (nominee for board)
Ed Gould, mt xinu (ditto)
Daniel Klein, SEI (diito)
Evi Nemeth, Univ of CO (ditto)
Sonya Neufer, Canstar (ditto)
Barry Shein, Software Tool & Die (ditto)
Dave Taylor, Intuitive Systems (ditto)
Alix Vasilatos, OSF (ditto)

Which dovetails nicely with Winter Usenix at D.C. in Jan.
Maybe we can have a Nominee-wannabe politiking/signature-getting BOF? :-)

It should be obvious that the primary requirement for nomination
to the Board is the stamina to attend both Summer and Winter USENIX
conferences and to know how to party well there.

don't laugh, steve. i used to think that usenix was out of
touch with its academic membership, but i'm beginning to believe
that the academics are out of touch with the usenix membership.

I didn't bother to renew my membership this year. With the
comp.sources.unix archives, I find the software tapes extraneous. The last
few conferences I've been to didn't seem worth the effort (Washington,
Atlanta, San Diego) and I can't remember the last time I read something
worthwhile in ;;login:.
