One way around all this mess is to mail cash. Yes, I know everyone says not to do it, but when was the last time your mail got lost? If USENIX won't take cash ("This note is legal tender for all debts public and private" notwithstanding) mail it to a (trustworthy) friend in the US and ask her/him to write a check. (I have had friends from the UK write me cheques on their British accounts to pay for hotel reservations in Scotland.) Or, if your friend trusts you, and you'll both be at Usenix, have them write the check now and *hand* them the cash later. Evelyn C. Leeper | +1 908-957-2070 | att!mtgzy!ecl or ecl@mtgzy.att.com

[Discussion of the fact that USENIX doesn't accept cheques on foreign banks, even when in USD, and not even on Canadian banks ] In article <1990Nov23.152052.7138@cbnewsj.att.com> ecl@cbnewsj.att.com (Evelyn C. Living in Europe, This problem comes up rather often for me. I have the choice of : - wiring money from my bank, in the proper currency - going to the post to get a "guaranteed cheque" (Teller's Cheque?) - going to my bank and getting cash in the proper currency - going to my bank and getting a travellors cheque in the proper currency I have found the last solution to be the easiest, and the least expensive. (Unless the amount is something like $10.05 : the smallest denomination for travellor's cheques is normally around $10-$15, depending on currency) -- Matt.Caprile@ec.bull.fr (or {uunet!}inria!ec.bull.fr!Matt.Caprile) Bull S.A. 1, rue de Provence phone : +33 76 39 77 52 B.P. 208 fax : +33 76 39 75 18 38432 Echirolles CEDEX telex : 980 648 F FRANCE
