[comp.edu] Which Unix machine should I buy?

lwt1@aplcen.UUCP (02/10/87)

I am in the process of selecting a new Unix machine for use in a
Graduate-level computing environment. The basic specs I see are:

	*  32 simultaneous users
	*  BSD 4.2 or 4.3 compatibility
	    - ingres, Franz Lisp, and Magic are the packages I need to
	      support, as well as the more mundane stuff, like C {:-)}.
	* 750+ Meg total disk (preferrably removable)
	* 6250 bpi tape (especially if disks not removable)
	* *Expandability* I'd like to be able to add CPU power later.

Of course, the system must be reliable and maintainable.

I have ~$70k to spend. Can I get a machine as described above, or am I
dreaming?

I solicit responses from SysAdmins, users, and vendors. I am
especially interested in hearing from those SysAdmins who are really
happy with their system, as well as those who wish they had never set
eyes on it.

If you wish your reply held confidential, please say so in your
response. Otherwise, I'll post a summary of responses to the net if
there is sufficient interest.

Thanks in advance for your help.
