I've been considering using the Abelson and Sussman book for my intro computer science course this fall. The book has been very highly recommended. It is the book used in the first course at MIT and the the course is taught using "scheme" (a variant of lisp). My problem is this: In most schools (as is true here at Duke) , the second course offered is "data structures," but it seems a bit silly (to me) to teach data structures using a lisp-like language. What does MIT do ? What do other schools do for the data structures course if they use scheme for the first course? What would you suggest? I could, of course, spend the first week or so of the second semester teaching Pascal - any comments?
