[comp.edu] which schools teach text-to-speech processing?

kjartan@rhi.uucp (Kjartan R. Gudmundsson) (10/20/87)

I want to continue my study in computer science in next autumn and I would
like to continue my work on text-to-speech for my language, Icelandic.
I am also interested in speech recognition.

I think it would be interesting to study in school were this work has
already been done for some language ( the text-to-speech part).

I received BS degree in february 1986 and have been working at the
university since, (University of Iceland, Reykjavik).

Can anyone out there in netland recommend a university that is strong
in this field?

The university has to be in an english speeking country or Scandinavia.

You might be in luck, although my information is probably old.
Back in 1976 I worked at the Royal Institute of Technology
in Stockholm on a text-to-speech system. There were two versions,
one from Swedish to Swedish, and the other English to English.
I worked briefly on the English to English system. This was one
of the first text-to-speech systems and was based on the work
done at the Naval Research Lab and at MIT. My boss was Gunnar
Fant who is now semi-retired. You should contact the Institute
for Speech Transmission at RIT.
