Australia's first national electronic writing project, THE AUSTRALASKAN WRITING PROJECT, has grown into a major international project now registered as "COMPUTER PALS ACROSS THE WORLD." The project is based on a system of matched sister schools both within Australia and overseas. Matched schools follow an educational program with set aims and objectives. The program follows six stages: Stage 1: Letter Writing Stage 2: Report Writing Stage 3: Poetry Writing Stage 4: Electronic Journalism Stage 5: Dialogue on Social Issues Stage 6: Script Writing The program ensures that the long-term educational value of the project is maintained while at the same time it allows schools the flexibility to set their own pace. The COMPUTER PALS PROJECT is fast becoming an educational tool for students with special needs such as deaf students and blind students as they communicate with others in various parts of the world, and also for teachers as a national and international inservice program as they share ideas with colleagues in other places. The Project aims to: 1. Provide a real context in which students can improve their written communication skills. 2. Provide an opportunity for cultural exchange through writing and other language arts activities, with a view to developing greater understanding among people irrespective of race or creed. 3. Motivate the linguistically less interested student. 4. Provide an opportunity for students to develop keyboard skills in a purposeful context. 5. Familiarize students with the use of international telecommunications. Finally, the COMPUTER PALS PROJECT is fortunate to have a network of Project Coordinators in every country involved.
