[comp.edu] A statement of our times in computer science education

steve@hubcap.UUCP ("Steve" Stevenson) (02/09/88)

The following - attributed to Alan Perlis - came into my hands
the other day. I thought I'd pass it on.

"It is against the grain of modern education to teach
children to program. What fun is there in making plans,
acquiring discipline in organizing thoughts, devoting attention
to detail, and learning to be self-critical?"

Is this an indictment? Is this the role of education? I thought
it was to teach folks how to make money. Silly me.
