[comp.edu] Summary of advice on editors for novices

harrison@utfyzx.uucp (David Harrison) (05/03/89)

Three or four weeks ago I asked for advice on editors for our
undergraduates in the Dept. of Physics. This is a summary of
the recommendations I received.

Emacs in one of its many forms	- 9 people.
		"naked" vi	- 1 person.
	KEDIT, a DOS editor	- 1 person.
			SC	- 1 person.
			SPF	- 1 person.

In addition, Todd Burkey offered a chance to alpha test his
folding editor: despite repeated attempts I couldn't get our
mailers to send him a reply. So here I can say "Thanks Todd
but I don't think it is what I am looking for."

I am in the process of running down KEDIT and SPF so I can
take a look.

Thanks to all who responded. I haven't yet decided what to do
but your help is appreciated.
