[comp.edu] Info on Software Engineering Education

I tried to post this earlier this week but for some reason it didn't
appear, sorry if it is duplicated.

:
Hi.

I need some help in gathering information on Software Engineering Education.
I appologize for posting this in two newsgroups, but I'm not sure that one
will cover the total audience I'm looking for. The information will be used
to help define a set a continuing education courses in software engineering
that will be presented to practicing software professionals.

I need information on three things.

a. For colleges and universities that have graduate software engineering
programs or course sequences, what prerequisites do you require? What
prior knowledge of software languages is required (what languages? how much
background?)? What other prerequisite knowledge is required/expected
(calculus? discrete math? engineering?)? I will be working with the SEI
and already have their 1989 SEI Report of Graduate Software Engineering
Education and their Feb 89 Software Engineering Education so if your
information is listed in these publications, duplication is not necessary.

b. For colleges and universities either with or without programs in
software engineering, but considering them, what do you see as the future
trends? How fast, or to what degree do you expect software engineering
education to move into the undergraduate programs? Do you see the rising
need for "technican" type training in software engineering similar to
the other engineering fields?

c. The third question is directed at industry. Are there any programs
used by companies, in-house, to update the skills of software engineering
professionals? How are they run? How have they worked out? What problems
were encountered? If you don't have them, do you think there is a valid
need?

I will appreciate any input you have on these questions. If it will help
keep from clogging the newsgroup any responses can be sent by e-mail
to me and if there is interest I will summarize. Thanks in advance.
