Seems like the following (true) story ought to be preserved for history somewhere, maybe on this newsgroup. My wife knew a guy who applied to eight prestigious grad schools (Berkeley, Cal Tech, Chicago, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford) and was accepted by all of them. So he sent seven of them the following form letter: Director of Admissions xxxxx University Dear Sir: Due to the large number of highly qualified graduate schools which have accepted me this year, it has been necessary to turn down a great many with truly fine records. Unfortunately your school has been included in this group. I wish you the best of luck in your future efforts to obtain graduate students; your fine record indicates you should have no trouble in doing so. Yours truly, R.D. A copy of the original turned up in some old files the other day.
