[comp.edu] ISETL as a first language

dlm@sjfc.UUCP (Don Muench) (07/28/90)

There has been some discussion about using Pascal as a first language.
Check out a language in which all objects are FIRST-CLASS, possesses
the usual control structures, has higher-order types like sets and
tuples(dynamically allocated arrays!), functions. It's interactive
and very, very cheap! The language is ISETL (Interactive SET Language).

See my review of it in The Notices of the American Math Society, March 1990.

Any copy of it that exists right now can be copied freely, but after this
summer you will have to get it from Ron Pullins of West Educational
Publishing in Amesbury, Mass. West will be the distributors sometime
later this year. It's best to get the 3.0 version, although there are
very few copies of that around. It runs on any IBM-compatible(MSDOS)
or Macintosh.
