INVITATION TO GIVE SEMINARS/WORKSHOP IN AUSTRALIA
	*************************************************

at	APPLIED COMPUTING RESEARCH INSTITUTE

	LA TROBE UNIVERSITY

	Melbourne Australia

Following its tremendously successful Advanced Databases Workshop in August 1990

La Trobe University is again welcoming expressions of interest in participating

in its Advanced Courses/Workshops in 1991.

The Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering at La Trobe
University has one of the largest postgraduate programs in Australia (over 50
students). It is committed to excellence in both teaching and research.

To foster this aim, it runs advanced courses/workshops for its graduate students
and staff, other academics and researchers, and industry.

Because of its isolation, it is tremendously aware of the need to have
international experts participate in these courses. They also, of course, have
the opportunity to provide input to our numerous, significant research projects.

In 1991, its primary focus will be to run one or more courses on Artificial
								 ----------
Intelligence. The reason for this is twofold: the department has major research
------------
interests in AI, and there will be many international visitors to Sydney for
IJCAI91. We expect our courses to be run in August and September.

We are however interested in all fields of computer science, and will probably
be organising workshops on Integrating AI and databases, as well as one on
databases.

The Courses:
-----------

(1) Graduate Courses

These are traditionally about 20 hours. Lecturers can take 3 or 6 hour blocks,
in conjunction with others: or indeed the whole course.

(2) Short Courses for Industry

One or two day affairs

(3) Seminars

One hour about the lecturer's research.

Support:
-------

La Trobe will in gerneral pay all local expenses and an honararium and/or
internal (Australian) airfares. There will be additional financial support for
those lecturers taking more than 3 hours of graduate courses, or short courses
for industry. There is also additional support for long-term visitors who
participate in our research programs.
