[comp.edu] Survey of Discrete Math Courses

friedman@pipe.cs.wisc.edu (Mark A. Friedman) (11/09/90)

Shortly, we (the computer science department at Trinity College,
Hartford, CT) will be working with our math department to reorganize
their Discrete Math course which is required by our majors. Both
departments are somewhat dissatisfied by what the course currently
covers. Our students see little connection between what is taught in
Discrete Math and the remainder of their courses. I'd like to get some
opinions on what others feel is most important to include in this
course. Thanks in advance to those who respond. I'll summarize the
results of this survey in a week or two.

How would you describe your computer science program? Theoretical,
Applied, Systems, etc.

Is Discrete Math required for your majors? Is it a prerequisite to any
Computer Science courses?

In what department is Discrete Math taught?

What percentage of the students in your Discrete Math classes are
Computer Science majors?

Please list topics taught in your Discrete Math class and prioritize
them according to how they serve the needs of the computer science
program.

Are you satisfied that the course serves the needs of computer
science?

What additional topics would you add to the course, if possible?

What topics would you remove from the course?

What other math requirements do you have of your students and how do
these requirements serve the needs of Computer Science?

Thanks,

Mark
