[comp.edu] Chemistry Database

jek5036@ritvax.isc.rit.edu (KING, JE) (12/16/90)

I have written a program released on the internet a while ago called
'chemtab' which is a periodic table database. I am currently a student at
Rochester Institute of Technology, and I need some input for research I am
doing which could help everyone.

This post is directed mainly to teachers, and/or professors of
High School Chemistry / College level Chem. I need feedback from a substantial
amount of people about the following:

If your school uses Macintosh computers, and you have an introductory
chemistry course, would you consider purchasing a program to run on the
Macintosh which does the following:
	1) Show information on a particular element
	2) Select three ranges of characteristics of elements to choose
	   from (example: Atomic Number > 50; Electronegativity > 1.1;
Melting Point < 3500 Celcius) and have the computer sift these out
	3) Display in a list form these elements from above
	4) Show the elements on the periodic table, highlighted in some way
as compared to the rest of the elements that did not match
	5) Graph elemental characteristics on the x-y axis, for example,
Atomic number vs. Atomic Mass (virtually linear graph) or
Atomic number Vs. Atomic Radius (angstroms) shows a pattern
	   to the student
	6) Any graph or list or chart can be printed out.
	7) (possibly) a pseudo 3-D representation of the element in question
	8) (possibly) a teacher-editable lesson section

I would appreciate it if people were to reply to that question, for
I need input from professors and/or teachers of chemistry as to whether
something of this nature would help, and if a product such as this is
marketable. If you do reply, and you say you are interested, I will save your
name and address on the internet so I can contact you if I do convince RIT to
help me with this project.
	Thank you for your time,
