I seem to have been lumbered with creating timetables. It seems that out there in netland must bethousands of people who have been through this and surely some who have written some useful software to ease the pain of this thankless task. The software needs to be able to handle the complex requirements of availability of rooms, staff and students covering numerous groups in several streams with external constraints.
