[comp.edu] Effective Volunteering

Let's not forget that there are other intellectual skills we'd like
to see our kids develop --- effective and creative writing, for
instance. One of our neighbors started "Park Road Publishing" (our
elementary school is Park Road School), where students can submit
original creative work and have the work typed, printed, copyrighted,
and placed in the school library. The typing and printing is done
by volunteers (like yours truly) using PC's and laser printers, so
the kids see their work done "professionally".

The theory is that kids like to see their names in print, and will
work hard, with their teachers, to develop their writing skills.
There have been a few cases where teachers abused the system (one
notable example being 22 versions of "My Summer Vacation" done as
a third grade class assignment), but by and large things seem to
be working out well.
