Hi Wally and all those that are confused by uw.general.

When one posts simultaneously to a local group and a netwide group with
a non local distribution, the name of the local group gets carried
along in the list of newsgroups. It gets carried on the back of that
netwide newsgroup and drops into a local group somewhere else that
happens to share the same name as the one in the header.
Now, the postfix "general" is a very common one. And many universities
have the uw prefix.

For the uw.general, usually it is the University of W(aterloo) and
University of W(ashington) that get hit with this bug. (probably
since were are on the same continent ...)

[By the way, this is Waterloo in Ontario Canada, not the other one in
Quebec or the one across the big puddle]

Now, for the "math" discussion bit: UW (Waterloo) just so happens
to have a Mathematics Faculty with the departments of
Pure Math, Applied Math, Combinatorics and Optimization, Statistics
and Actuarial Sciences, Computer Science. Also the Math Faculty
has all sorts of links with industry, math contests, technical math
journals, etc... We earn bizarre degrees like BMATH, MMATH and
there is even a DMATH (given only honoris causa)

Math is very common in this neck of the woods ...

We're sorta resigned to getting the *occasional* article drifting across the
Atlantic and dumping itself in our general group from Washington and (less
commonly) Waterloo. To be honest, I hadn't noticed *how much* had been coming
through, as I automatically kill anything not coming out of Warwick.

But regardless of all the reasons for the insane distributions, surely the
bulk of the traffic, the *maths* stuff, doesn't this belong OUT of a *general*
group?
