[comp.dcom.lans] Ethernet Test Equipment

Our maintenance folks think they should have some kind of Ethernet
test equipment. So far, we have had no problems that can't be
handled by a little imagination or by a PC with the MIT TCP/IP
NETWATCH program. I'd like to know what kind of test equipment
you have and if it actually helped you solve any problems. I'd
also be interested in periodic testing or testing done after
modifying a network.

It really depends on what level you want to test. For a physical test,
a Time-Domain-Reflectometer is a good machine. For the higher levels,
we have some tools called "traffic" and "etherfind" that can be run on
Sun workstations (included in release 3.0 and beyond). The traffic
program gives a real-time bar-graph of various usage statistics, and
the etherfind program is used to get packet traces for debugging
high-level protocols.
