about a year ago one of our administrative departments here at york installed a CATV backbone throughout our main campus; unfortunately they didn't consult with anyone else and configured it for low-split operation; recently, i've been investigating the possibilities of appropriating one of the channels on the backbone for broadband ethernet i suppose that i should mention that the original intent of the CATV installation was to provide a couple of channels of live video feeds as well as to allow the university to re-sell television service to student residences; so far as i know, at this point not much more has happened beyond the laying of the backbone the vendors that i've contacted so far can operate only on mid-split and high-split systems 1. why should this be so? even in low-split i have some number of channels running in the 'reverse' direction... why would these vendors place this seemingly artificial restriction on themselves? 2. does anyone know of any vendor(s) that offer a low-split broadband ethernet product that can plug-in to an existing CATV network? 3. forgetting for just a moment the political implications... it is possible to simply replace the head-end frequency translator to change the system from low-split to let's say mid-split? i have heard said that this cannot be done because each amplifier along the backbone embodies the split characteristic of the entire system... head-ends are relatively cheap but it would be prohibitive to replace each of the amplifiers as well (or can they be re-tuned/re-wired?) any help at all in this matter will be appreciated ---- Voice: Eriks Rugelis Ma Bell: 416/736-5257 x.2688 UUCP: seismo!mnetor!yetti!eriks NetNorth/BITNET: eriks@yulibra Would like to be: Eriks.Rugelis@york.ac.can Quote: User-friendliness is one of the most subtle forms of brutality known to man. -- Voice: Eriks Rugelis Ma Bell: 416/736-5257 x.2688 UUCP: seismo!mnetor!yetti!eriks NetNorth/BITNET: eriks@yulibra Would like to be: Eriks.Rugelis@york.ac.can Quote: User-friendliness is one of the most subtle forms of brutality known to man.
