I need to use IBM PCs on a LAN (not specified which) as terminals to our IBM mainframes, and want something approaching direct 3278 performance. I can currently run telnet over Ethernet into a Spartacus box; good performance, but the Spartacus is only here on loan, and has some stability problems. When I get tn3270 for the PC (real soon now) I can also try via Wiscnet and the DACU. Alternatively, there is the gateway approach using coax connections to a 3274 (I am not interested in gateways using a serial link to a 37x5). I could get a dedicated box from Ungermann-Bass; would be OK, but a closed solution. Alternatively, I know about PC-based gateways like the DCA Irmalan or CXI PCOX, which work on any NETBIOS network. First question: have I missed any possibilities (yes, I know that the Token Ring will offer a more direct connection)? Second question: is there much user experience of such products? How does the performance compare to a direct 3278/9? Load on LAN? Other factors. If anyone cares to share their experience I should be most obliged.
