I have seen a lot of books in the stores that cover the theory of local area networks, the 7-layer ISO model, IEEE 802.3, etc., but I haven't run across anything that gives good, practical advice on how to design and install your own network (e.g., how does one tap the cable? How does it work when the transceiver is in the NIC instead of being a separate device? How to interface a coaxial network to a twisted-pair one. Etc.). I'm sure that such books exist, but they must have been hiding behind all of the more general, theoretical ones. I am especially interested in Ethernet on both coax and twisted pair, and in TCP/IP. I am also interested in putting Unix, MicroVax with VMS, IBM PC's, and Macintosh's all on one network. Any book recommendations would be appreciated.
