We're looking for a data communications analyzer that allows you to plug in modules that understand different protocols and media, like Ethernet, SDLC, HDLC, SNA, X.25, TCP/IP, XNS, etc. An ideal device would be portable, like a Compaq PC, and allow us to plug in different cards at different times to analyze different protocols running on different media. Does anyone know of such a device? Any pointers would be appreciated. Please reply to Andy Barnhouse, andy@rosevax.rosemount.com.

The only analyzer that handles multiple protocols that I know of is the Network General Sniffer. For link layer, they'll handle token ring, ethernet and ARCNet, for higher layers most of the major protocols, including XNS, TCP/IP, 802.2, the various PC LAN protocols such as Novells, 3COM's and IBM's, etc. They don't have an RS 232 interface, so no SDLC or HDLC, even though I've suggested it to them a couple of times. You can reach them at (408) 734-0464. They have a demo disk and also had an article about the Sniffer in the latest issue of the IBM PC Technical Journal. I've no connection with them except as a happy customer. |Please reply to Andy Barnhouse, andy@rosevax.rosemount.com. Jerry Whitnell Lizzi Borden took an axe Communication Solutions, Inc.
